Join us for Colour Intensive Summer School, an inspiring four week exploration of colour techniques in knitting, led by innovative designer and tutor, Woolly Wormhead.

This immersive course is designed for knitters who want to deepen their understanding of colour, texture, and pattern across a range of distinctive techniques. Each week focuses on a different approach to working with colour, giving you the opportunity to experiment, build confidence, and discover new creative possibilities in your knitting practice.

Across the four weeks, you will explore stranded colourwork, dipped stitches, short row colourwork, and mosaic knitting. You will not only learn how each technique works, but also how to apply them effectively, troubleshoot common challenges, and develop a stronger sense of how colour can shape and transform your fabric.

The course is highly practical, with demonstrations, guided exploration, and dedicated time to experiment with swatches so you can put each new technique into practice as you learn.

Colour Intensive - Class Summary

Week 1: Better Stranded Colourwork
We begin with stranded colourwork, including traditions such as Fair Isle and Selbu. You will explore how to manage multiple colours within a single row or round, focusing on improving tension, colour dominance, and yarn management. Woolly will also demonstrate supporting techniques that help strengthen your overall stranded colourwork practice.

Week 2: Explore Two Colour Dipped Stitches
This week introduces dipped stitches, also known as embroidery or elongated stitches, where stitches are worked into rows below the current row. You will learn how to accurately locate stitches, maintain even tension, and introduce a second colour to highlight texture and pattern. You will also practice with provided stitch patterns.

Week 3: Short Row Colourwork
In this session, you will explore Woolly’s developed approach to short row colourwork, building on techniques refined since their Elemental collection. You will learn how short rows shape fabric, including key skills such as German short rows, and how to repair and graft them. Through swatching, you will experiment with colour combinations and discover how this method creates dynamic, expressive designs.

Week 4: Discover Mosaic Colourwork
The final week focuses on mosaic colourwork, an accessible and striking technique ideal for those newer to colour knitting. You will learn how slipped stitches are used to create pattern while only working one colour per row. Woolly will demonstrate the method using garter stitch and also explain how mosaic patterns are written and charted.
