Design and make your own colourful cushion cover

with Georgia Farrell

Join Georgia for this short course and get creative, designing and making your own intarsia colourwork cushion cover.

In five classes held over seven weeks, you will create, both visually through designing and physically through knitting, a beautiful and personal accessory for your home. Session one is all about inspiration, creativity and the beginning of the design process. Session two is the practical translation of inspiration into a knittable design. Session three will give you all the technical skills to go ahead and begin knitting your very own intarsia colourwork design. In session four, we will check in on the knitting process, giving you a chance to ask questions, gain support and share your progress before session five, which will cover everything you need to know in order to make up and finish your cushion professionally.

Class numbers are limited, ensuring plenty of individual attention and the chance to ask questions as you work. A perfect next step for knitters ready to explore intarsia design with an expert by their side.

Class Summary

Session 1: the creative design session!

Spend some time getting creative, finding your own inspiration and playing with shapes and colour through collage and drawing. Choose from three approaches; take inspiration from your own photographs tracing lines and shapes, take an abstract approach using collage (Georgia’s signature) or create a stylised picture knit of motifs or objects. Maybe even try your hand at all three!

Session 2: creating a chart to work from and covering construction options.

In this session we will look at both an analogue and a digital method for creating a colourwork chart of your design to knit from. We will also cover the details of two construction methods that you can choose from; an envelope style cushion cover worked in one piece and fastened with buttons or a classic cushion cover worked in two pieces, seamed and closed with a zip along the bottom edge.

Session 3: how to work intarsia.

This session will be the main technical knitting session. We will cover how to work the intarsia method of colourwork with no prior experience necessary. We will also look at the nuance of colourwork and when it’s necessary / optimal to combine intarsia with stranded colourwork.

Session 4: this is a slightly shorter session giving you a chance to check in with Georgia, ask for any support with knitting and share your progress.

Session 5: making up your cushion cover.

In our last session, we will cover all the techniques necessary to make up your cushion cover; mattress stitch for seaming, attaching buttons, inserting a zip.
