Couture Cables Intensive
With Fiona Ellis

Fiona would like to teach the whole world how to knit cables because she LOVES the technique! She also enjoys exploring the technique as an expression of creativity.
This four-week course begins with building a foundation knowledge of cable knitting techniques. With an understanding of what is taking place we are better able to follow a pattern and fix any mistakes as they might arise. But more than that, we can then apply that knowledge to creating more personalised projects and explore our creativity.
Throughout the class Fiona will guide participants on a personal adventure into creating their own unique cable patterns: creating couture cables.

Couture Cables Intensive - Class Summary
Week 1
We will begin by looking at the basic building blocks of cable patterning and review cable techniques. Including tips for understanding the terminology and reading charts, useful tools for even advanced knitters.
Then we will start our adventure into creating our own cables. Using patterns that already exist (stitch dictionaries & on-line sources) as a springboard we will create new looks by combining patterns set both horizontally across the width of the fabric and vertically arranged combos.
Week 2
In this session, with Fiona as our guide, we will explore how to create our own unique cable ideas based on a personal non-knitted inspiration. This will include interpretation of patterning, repeat patterning, and how to chart our ideas.
We will also look at ways of adding embellishment, such as other stitch patterns, to simple cables patterns, as a way of personalising them.
Week 3
Building on, and responding to, the ideas begun in week 1 & 2 we will work to refine our initial ideas and build a collection of complementary patterns. We will also look at how cables affect fabric gauge & fabric quality. Then work through the calculations for adding our designs to potential projects.
Week 4
When knitting cables based on Celtic patterns there are some techniques not used in regular rope cables. In this session will discuss these, look at the techniques and how to read the charts. We will close our adventure with a look at ideas for placements of cable patterns and other design considerations.
