Intarsia Intensive
With Georgia Farrell
Join designer Georgia Farrell for a deep dive into one of her signature techniques, intarsia. If you’ve ever taken a class on intarsia and felt like you still wanted more at the end, then this intensive 4 week course is for you!
We'll start with the very basics, how to read charts and work the all important intarsia colour change. Spending time looking at how to improve the look of your intarsia and how to finish off your knitted fabrics professionally, as well as how you can utilise other colour work techniques alongside intarsia where appropriate to make for an easier knit. We'll then look at how we can combine intarsia with different textures and stitches for added interest and details. Before finally working our way up to designing your very own intarsia fabrics, choosing colour palette and looking at how you can apply them to create unique, personalised knits.

Week 1
The basics. Preparing your yarns for working intarsia, how to read a chart, and how to work the all important intarsia colour change. In this session we will work on an intarsia swatch designed by Georgia that starts off with some simple colour blocks to ease you in gently, and becomes a bit more challenging as your work it up.
Week 2
In this session we will look at how you can improve the look of your intarsia work and how you can create a neat and professional finish to your knits. We will also cover how you can utilise other colour work techniques such as stranded colour work and duplicate stitch, where appropriate, for an easier and more efficient knitting process. We will work on a swatch to try out working in these extra techniques, as well as looking at and ‘finishing’ our swatch from session 1.
Week 3
This session will be all about combining intarsia with different textured stitches, both the practicalities of knitting these fabrics and the different effects you can create that add interest and detail to the designs. We will work on a series of textured intarsia mini swatches in this session.
Week 4
In our last session, you will create your very own intarsia fabric design under Georgia’s guidance. She will share her process for building compositions, selecting colour combinations and developing designs. In the session you will create a chart to knit from and make a start on your design swatch. We will also cover how you can apply your intarsia fabric design to projects and create unique, personalised knits.
